NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

Posted on: December 26, 2008 12:42 pm

It is possible that 2 8 - 8 teams could make the NFL Playoffs this season and that's not right......

The Arizona Cardinals are 8 - 7 but thet have already locked up the NFC West.  A loss 2 the improving Seahawks would drop 'Zona 2 an 8- 8 record and that could very well happen......

The Chargers,  a gm under .500 @ 7 - 8,  can lock up the AFC West with a win over The Broncos on Sunday night,  hopefully that won't happen,  me being a Broncos fan and all.......

There's nothing " playoff - caliber " about being a .500 team.......

But that's not the worst of it......It is possible 5 or more teams could wind up with better records than the AFC and NFC West division winners and b shut out of the playoffs.......The Pats could finish 11 - 5 but not make it 2 the 2nd season if both The Ravens and The Dolphins win on Sunday........

Even if 'Zona and The Broncos pull out the W's on Sunday and win their respective divisions with 9 - 7 records,  IMO,  they still are not playoff worthy......@ least not this yr,  not with all of the good teams out there.......

This is what happens when u let division winners receive an automatic spot in the playoffs,  regardless of their win - loss records....I don't like in Baseball and not in Football either.........

I say let the 6 teams with the best records from each conference duke it out 4 a shot @ The Super Bowl.........

Again,  this is only my opinion.........

NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

Why change anything?  Yes SD got in at 8-8, but they did get screwed on that fumble against Denver in week three, so they would have been 9-7 and they barely lost some other games throughout the year.  Records only matter in the fact that you just have to make it to the playoffs.  After that, everyone is back on an equal playing field.   Last time I checked, SD beat Indy and Indy won 12 games during the regular season.  Every team has the ability to control there own destiny in the beginning of the year.  Some teams do just enough to make it to the playoffs and then make it to the playoffs, other teams dominate the regular season and fall flat on their face in the playoffs being one and done.  Don't punish Arizona and San Diego for the rest of their divsion playing pathetic throughout the year.  Records don't always tell the truth about how good a team is, that is what the playoffs are to decide.

NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

Did the fact that the Colts and Falcons had to go on the road the only reason they lost to the so called garbage teams ? 11-5 and 12-4 teams should be able to win those games or they're no better than the 8-8 teams. Another thing, it doesn't happen every year so I don't see what the big deal was from the get go. As far as the Pats 11-5 not making it, I say add some more wild cards, 4 divisions in each conference there should be 4 wild cards, but don't hold your breath, the NFL is slow when it comes to changing those type of things.

Isn't it sad when an 11-5 team misses the playoffs. The problem to me is too many divisions. When you have 4 automatics like that from each conference and only 2 extra spots for wild cards, this is going to happen. I agree, something needs to be tweaked.

NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

The playoff system, for better or worse, kept a lot of us captivated again this year. The only team that has some righteous indignation for being passed over this year is New England. No other team has a legitimate gripe.

Adding more play-off teams means adding more weeks/games. While that prospect sounds good at first, with it comes more injuries and fatigue. In the end the best teams should compete at their optimum levels of abilility and skill. Even with its flaws, the present system accomplishes this.

NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

When the NFL divided the teams into 8 divisions of four, they created this very scenario.

I remember the NHL playoffs used to have four divisions; the Norris, Smyth, Adams & Patrick. It used to be a 1-12 seeding, then a 1-16 seeding when the league went from 17 - 21 teams. The balanced schedule, along with the #1 playing #16 setup all but guaranteed the better teams made the postseason, and also advanced in the postseason. NHL expansion finally stopped at 30 teams, but meantime they had to create 6 divisions - more divisions, more division winners, more of a chance that a division winner has a lousy record.

It's exactly what the NFL has been going through. Used to be 28 teams in 6 divisions. Now its 32 teams in 8 divisions - more divisions, more division winners, more of a chance that a division winner has a lousy record.

NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

I think that it would be very hard to have "fair" schedules for each team, just because of the divisional games and the fact that you can't predict Exactly how all the NFL teams will do, for instance, people thought the cowboys, jags, chargers could all be SB contenders, come mid season, they all have average records, not to mention that trades and injuries can cuse major problems for a team. It just isn't possible for there to be a even and fair way to make the sched. Rico, but i see where your getting at.

As for changing the playoff system, yea right now it seems upfair, but it is one of the most fair playoff schems out there. Division leaders are usually the leaders because they have a winning record against the other 3 teams within their division, not often do you see teams who have a poor record in their divison, win it. It just so happens this year that the Rams and Seahawks performed poorly, i dont think anyone though they would do that bad. Is it completely fair that New England may get ousted with Arizona may get in? no, not completely, but if your able to beat out the 3 other teams you play the most, regardless that should count for something. This year just turned out to be an off year in terms of total fairness of playoff spots, but you know what, that is afterall what makes the game exciting.

At least there isnt a BS computer spitting out postseason hopes...

NFL Playoffs Need Tweaking........

It is so incredibly difficult to make a truly effective playoff system. There are always going to be divisions like the NFC and AFC West that are just completely sub-par from top to bottom. How do you reward division winners, but also incorporate the best teams in the league when they are not always one in the same? The unbalanced nature of schedules also makes things incredibly difficult. Is it fair that the Cardinals got to play the Rams and Seahawks twice, while the Cowboys have to play the Giants, Redskins, and Eagles twice each? Creating a greater balance in the regular season scheduling for teams may help to make a more fluid and balanced playoff system in the future, although I doubt that such a system would ever come to fruition.

How about this?  You get an automatic bid for winning your division if you are one of of the top 3 division winners by record.  The division winner with 4th best record can get bumped if there is any other team in the conference with a better record.  That would entice these teams whom have "locked up spots" not to coast in the last few weeks which affects other teams and their playoff chances.

Just a thought.
